You ARE Good

What makes you good? Just goodness in general. What is good? How do you know if you are? Are you a good person? What defines that? Who decides?

I love to help Moms believe that they ARE a Good Mom! So first we have to define for ourselves what a good mom is. And it usually turns out to be a huge long list of unrealistic expectations that we have set for ourselves that if not met perfectly, we don’t let ourselves believe that we are a good mom. Erroneous Thinking, my friends! Thought Error!!
Let’s take a step back and ask what makes you good? Forget the Mom part. Just goodness in general. What is good? How do you know if you are? Are you a good person? What defines that? Who decides?

These are important questions to answer for yourself because otherwise you are left to your default thoughts about it that are driving everything else for you and you end up with results you don’t want. Decide intentionally what you want to believe about what good even means. And I would encourage you to decide intentionally that you ARE good! Inherently. At your core. It’s who you ARE.

God is Good. He made you. You are good. Full stop.

That’s what I choose to believe and it serves me really well.
I’ve decided that there isn’t a long list of requirements that qualify as good. I just am. Because He Is. And I’m his daughter. Made up of divine DNA that IS Good. I like thinking that because then I just have to be who I am. I don’t have to change into someone different. I just have to remember who I am and be more of her.

So. This principle applies everywhere. Not just with your one role as a Mom.

My friend Kayla Giles is an LDS Convert Coach. Which means that she coaches people who have joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints later in life. They didn’t grow up in the church. In our discussion (above) we discovered that whether you are a convert or not, or even a member of the church or not, I think that all humans (because our brains love to go into all or nothing thinking) have a hard time accepting that they ARE Good if they aren’t living up to these exceedingly high expectations they’ve set for themselves. Specifically in the church culture sometimes we have a hard time understanding that yes, there are commandments, but no, you don’t have to be perfect at following them in order to be good.

All the time I hear people say things like “they don’t go to church anymore, but they are a good person”. or “They struggle with the word of wisdom but they are a good person” As if the rule is that in order to be good you need to follow all the rules. But some people are good even though they’re not? I’m not buying it.

What you do or don’t do does NOT define WHO you ARE!!!

Yes of course they are a good person. full stop. AND they struggle with whatever human frailties they are struggling with. As are we. There is no they and us. We are all human beings doing the best we can in this mortal state. We are actual eternal beings doing the best we can in this human state. Either way none of us are perfect right now. We are all growing, learning, developing, and maturing. None of which is easy or possible if we were already perfect.

So, cut yourself some slack. and cut everyone else some slack. That is the second great commandment, after all. To love your neighbor as yourself. Love. the greatest commandment. We are also all imperfect at doing that one. But we ARE Still Good!

You ARE Good! Believe it! Cause when you think it, and FEEL it, then you do it and become what you’ve always been. Good!

Got it? Good!
